Castelnuovo di Garfagnana

Introduction

This very significant town of over 6,000 inhabitants overlooks the point at which the Serchio and the Turrite come together. Castelnuovo di Garfagnana boasts an imposing castle dating from the14th century, built  for the noble Este family

In Castelnuovo you can find very helpful information about the Apuane Alps in the tourist information office  on Piazza delle Erbe as well as in the Centro Visite Parco Alpi Apuane (visitor´s centre). Staff can provide you with information about the Apuane Alps, guides to accommodation and activities to enjoy in the area such as horse riding, hiking, mountain and biking. You can also purchase maps of hiking trails.

There is a club where keen walkers gather, the Club Alpino Italiano on Via Vittorio Emanuelle 3.

From Castelnuovo there are endless possibilities to captivate your senses as roads cross magnificent sceneries to relish. A road goes to Castiglione di Garfagnana, Foce di Radici and the Apennines along a series of frightening bends. You can also take the road to Villa Colemandine, then Castiglione and Corfino to reach the Riserva Naturale dell’Orechiella where walkers find a paradise. Finally the SS445 leads you into the Tuscan Lunigiana, across green fields. Nearby is the Lago Vagli that makes an excellent spot for a relaxing walk.

The thousands of caves beneath the hills form a magical hidden world waiting to be explored.
