This town still keeps its ancient hexagonal walls that date back to the 16th century. The walls surround attractions of much historic value and excellent restaurants and accommodation. It has a pedestrianized area free ideal for a typical Tuscan passeggiata.
Grosseto had been in the power of Siena but was taken by Florence in the 16th century. The Medicis had the walls constructed immediately to protect what was their grain and salt storage.
