The northwestern area of Tuscany will immediately change the traveller´s usual pace of life, more relaxation and less rushing about. These low mountains provide a vantage point from which to admire the sea and surrounding beautiful scenery as well as being filled with a range of trails for hiking and horse-riding in nature. These activities can be organized easily at tourist offices in the region.
Northern Tuscany is home to about 1300 hidden caves, where underground you´ll find quite a different atmosphere to the one you enjoy in daylight. The abysses, caverns and lakes are certainly worth exploring.
Towns also enjoy true architectural beauty and charm: the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the maze of narrow streets in Lucca, Romanesque palazzi and piazzas to admire on a passeggiata or for people-watching over a good Italian coffee. Don´t forget the thousands of castles scattered across the Lunigiana, the fantasy world of the Pinocchio Park in Collodi, an attraction for children and adults alike, and the pampering experience of a thermal bath in Bagni di Lucca.
