Verna attracts religious tourism as it is home to the sanctuary where Saint Francis’ stigmata apparently appeared on his body
From Verna’s visitors centre there is a pleasant walking trail leading to the sanctuary (www.santuariodellaverna.com).
In the Chiesa Maggiore or basilica be sure to see Andrea della Robbia’s glazed ceramics, and Saint Francis’ belongings such as blood-stained garments and his whip for self-flagellation
Cappella della Pieta is by the Chiesa Maggiore’s entrance. The frescoed Corridoio delle Stimmate shows events from Saint Francis’ life. The heart of the basilica is the Cappella delle Stimmate housing Lucca and Andrea della Robbia’s terracotta pieces. The sanctuary has a myriad of other halls, courtyards and frescoes to admire.
